I finished my major in Electrical & Computer Engineering in Dec '05. I recall many fond memories of Big Red, especially of my time with the CIC. From back when the NAV was ~ $8 and 10 min meetings were the norm, CIC has grown by leaps and bounds in the last few years. I was an active CIC member through my undergrad years and had the honor of serving as the club’s P.M. for my last two. Although the size of the portfolio never reached a market moving level, the soaring level of energy and raw investment talent present each meeting was unquestionable. It was always exciting to throw around trade ideas (pixr, mvl, jdsu, ovti…) with others who were similarly passionate about investing; a number of them remain friends and/or are now professional contacts on the street. I am currently employed at Goldman Sachs in NY, within the Equities division. Last week I got a call from a hedge fund client (another CIC alumnus) - “Jim, wanted to talk about the move in the market today …”, and it was just like old times. I encourage students with an interest in investing to attend a meeting. The risk/reward is pretty good.

I first joined CIC in Fall 2001. The following semester I was elected to be the marketing officer for the club. Subsequent to that role I worked closely with Presidents Schoenberg, Gilman and Rand. I thoroughly enjoyed making several presentations a semester and running the original Investing 101 seminars. In 2004 I completed my degree in AEM and in 2006 received my Masters in Environmental Economics. Today I work for the Cornell University Office of University Investment where a number of current and former CIC members have spent a summer or semester interning. The CIC is far bigger today than when I first joined. I am excited that all of the changes and transformations made during my first few years (thanks in particular to Mssr. Schoenberg and Gilman) created the successful club we have today.

When I first joined the CIC my freshman year, I knew very little about the stock market, let alone how to analyze stocks. Luckily I quickly came up to speed with the help of a few more seasoned members of the club and was hooked from then on. One of the unique aspects of the club is that it doesn’t matter what you’re knowledge level is when you first join because you’re given ample opportunity to learn from others and you’re treated as a equal partner in the decision making process. Everyone gets one vote regardless of how many shares of the fund you own or what previous experience you have. I was very fortunate to serve as the portfolio manager, then president of the club and also to work with a great group of dedicated, passionate, and smart investors. After graduating in ’05 with a degree in economics, I now work at BlackRock on a small and mid cap growth team as an equity research analyst covering the consumer sector.
